Two Months

Becoming a mom is an experience that is difficult to describe in words. There are so many emotions that go into everyday as your baby learns and grows and the small milestones they meet bring you such joy. As I sit here holding my little boy after a feeding, I can’t help but to take him all in; his smell, his wiggles, his little grunts as he sleeps, and realizing that he’s heavier than yesterday. These moments are numbered because before I know it, he’ll be all grown up.
How has it already been two months since my little boy entered this world? The newborn stage is over for him and now he’s growing into an actual little person. His cooing is more often, his movements are becoming more natural (although it’s not perfect yet), he’s gaining control over his head, and tummy time is an essential part of the day. The days of just trying to survive off one or two hours of sleep have subsided (thankfully). But knowing my baby is requiring such sleep means he’s growing. You hear all the stories or advice from others about sleep deprivation and you think you’re prepared for it. After all, you did pull some gnarly all nighters in college so this should be like that, right? HUGE nope! Back then, you knew after that exam you could catch up on sleep and all would be right in your world. With a newborn, there is no catching up. It’s a constant longing for sleep, especially if you’re nursing and have to be up every 30 mins to feed the baby. Sleep when the baby sleeps? Not as easy as it sounds. I really don’t think you can ever prepare for sleep deprivation as a first time parent. Thank God my mom was here helping us!There are always going to be challenges in life, but I can honestly say that the joy I feel when I see his smiles and hear him cooing far outweigh the challenges of those rough, early, newborn days. I look at him now and he’s not the same little baby we brought home from the hospital. They say time goes by quick, but I don’t think I realized just how quick until Dominic was born. Watching him change right in front of our eyes brings on those happy tears.
Honestly, the first two months of being a new parent were hard. You can read all the books, take all the classes, subscribe to all those mommy blogs, but you’re never truly prepared for what is to come when that little ball of sweetness enters the world. You just have to take it day by day and remember that it’s a constant learning experience on all sides. What’s important is a healthy baby! Take the challenges in strides and know that what you considered to be “normal” before baby will never be again. Creating a new “normal” can be just as exciting though. And I’m excited to see how our journey with our baby continues and all the memories we will make with him!
Always,Samantha <3
