Sleep Deprivation Tips
Sleep deprivation during postpartum (or literally any time in your life) can be tough to overcome. Speaking as a mother of three who is currently 6 months postpartum, I have had (and continue to have) my fair share of sleepless nights. I wish there were a magic button to press at night that automatically makes everyone in the home sleep for 12 hours straight. Sadly, I haven’t found such a thing.
Instead of dwelling on the things we can’t have, let’s focus on what we can do during those sleep deprivation seasons.
Sleep Deprivation Tips Postpartum
Go to bed when the baby goes to bed: I know this is difficult because you want some time to yourself after the baby is down. However, the more sleep you get at the beginning of the night, the better off you will be. This is just a season— you will be back to binging Netflix shows until all hours of the night soon enough!
Establish a routine: James Clear writes about habits in his best-selling book Atomic Habits. Essentially, what you create as a routine now will become the triggers for your life. Therefore, start triggers now that help your baby understand that sleep time is coming. Be consistent! The little things matter when it comes to forming habits.
Ask for help: Again, I know this is a hard thing to do. Sometimes, you just have to tag someone else in to help you get some sleep even if that means having a friend come over during the day so that you can get a nap to get you through.
Do what works best for your baby: I’ve had three babies and what worked for one baby to get them to sleep didn’t work for the next one. Instead of wondering why this baby wouldn’t conform to what worked with my other baby, I had to do what was right for this baby. It’s tough to learn their little quirks, especially since they can’t tell you. You might have to try a couple of different things and that’s okay. Don’t give up!
Take breaks: There are many times (especially during the night) when you can get frustrated. You’re tired and you just want to sleep, but your baby has other plans. Take a break! Walk out of the room if you have to. As long as the baby is in a safe spot, you can walk away for a few minutes to catch your breath (and even cry a little).
Talk to a sleep consultant: I know everyone has their own opinions about sleep consultants. Honestly, if you are at your wit’s end, a sleep consultant can help. Maybe they give you a different perspective on why your baby isn’t sleeping, or maybe they can help you create a whole plan to get your baby to sleep. Whatever the case, find someone who fits your family and appreciates your values.
There is a reason why they use sleep deprivation as a torture tactic. It can turn you into someone you don’t recognize. It can completely alter your brain and your performance each day. My first baby didn’t sleep through the night until he was 14 months old. My second baby was sleeping through the night at 6 weeks old. I’m still working on my current six-month-old. Every baby is different! Do what works for you and your family.

Mom Inspo:
Postpartum Fact:
Ideal timing between pregnancies:
“Instead of simply time between birth, the research suggests that the nutritional status of a woman and her subsequent children is affected by something called the recuperative interval - the time that a woman is not pregnant or lactating. In other words, not all time between babies is equal. This is because breastfeeding is equally or more nutritionally demanding on a mama’s body than pregnancy, so the longer she nurses the more time she’ll need to replenish nutrients after she finishes.”
