My Blog

What drives a person to want to create their own blog and share things about their life with others?
The truth is I really don’t know the answer to that. There are various reasons why someone would want to be exposed in letting others read about their life.
For me, my reason for wanting to create this journal blog is so that I can express myself creatively and connect with my passion for writing.
In the Beginning
As a child, I remember sitting at my grandmother’s computer with a Word document up on the computer screen on various afternoons. I would sit for hours typing away. Usually, I would produce some sort of children’s short story.
I remember one story in particular that I wrote about this group of kids hearing a scary noise in the woods and they explored to find that the noise was actually a neighbor’s dog in need of help. During their journey however, they believed that the noise was coming from a ghost. What an imagination the child’s mind is capable of!
Along with these short stories, I also received a couple of awards in elementary school for my writing submissions. The first award, I believe I was either in second or third grade.
I remember my award ceremony and being given a copy of my own story on yellow, laminated paper (to preserve my color crayon drawings, of course) with a black spiral bounding keeping it all together. On the cover of my book was a large, gold star like an official stamp you would see on a legal document.
I was so proud of that gold star sticker, even if I didn’t fully understand what was really going on during this ceremony at the time. I’m fairly certain my mother still has this award of mine as a keepsake.
Another award I won was from a writing I submitted in the fifth grade.
I remember that this writing was actually a required assignment for class and my teacher was the one who submitted the students’ works for review and consideration. I remember being told that my writing and a friend’s writing were up against each other’s, along with another classmate’s.
I ended up getting second place which came with a small monetary reward and a really heavy U.S. pin. The pin represented the topic of the writing assignment, which was “Is the U.S. a Melting Pot or a Salad Bowl?” I still have that pin to this day and haven’t taken it out of its casing.
Growing Up
Although my writing never really went further than my childhood years, I have not lost the drive to want to write and share my creativity.
I have always been encouraged by my family and my husband to continue my writing as it is clear that this is something I want to do.
Recently, I have submitted a few writing pieces to a magazine and I’ve had five of my submissions chosen and published in that magazine so far.
With each letter of acceptance and pay for my pieces, I have gained a little more confidence in myself to just start writing more and more.
I want to open myself up more and get that writing experience to better my skills. It’s not about the money; it’s about that flicker of passion I have deep down that is craving more oxygen to become a fire of writing.
I’m not sure where to start, but this journal blog seems like a good starting point and I hope you enjoy the journey with me!
Always,Samantha <3
